Tips for worthwhile excursions
The world heritage region Wartburg-Hainich is famous for many castles, beautiful landscapes and attracts many visitors from all over Germany every year. Especially Muehlhausen is known for its historic city center, which is only 5 minutes away from our hotel. Explore the city center with its 13 interesting churches and the 2.4 km long city wall and learn more about the history of our city.
Starting from Mühlhausen you can do a lot of things and see nice places. Below we have arranged some tips for interesting day trips in the nearby region.
Muehlhausen / Thuringia
In the Middle Ages Muehlhausen was next to Erfurtthe second most powerful city in the Thuringian region. The Muehlhaeuser fair is the largest city fair in Germany.
Muehlhausen is also known for its rich historical heritage, it was place of Johann Sebastian Bachs and Thomas Munzers activities and until 1803 the free imperial city of Muelhausen. Many historic buildings such as the city walls and the churches bear nowadays witness to the former importance oft he city. A guided tour of Muehlhausen is always worthwhile and very popular.

Niederdorla with Opfermoor and the geographical center of Germany (about 5 km)
Niederdorla is located on the northern edge of the national park
Hainich about 5 kilometers south of Muehlhausen. The oldest house
of the village is the „Deutschritterordenhaus“ a knight house from
1653 situated in Herrenstraße 2. Interesting is also the St. John's

A special attraction (of the place) in this region is the Opfermoor (an ancient settlement and worship of the Teutons) with a former
lake. Between 1957 and 1964 here were found many ancient objects
from the period between the sixth century before Christ and the
10./11. century after Christ. All objects can be seen in an
exhibition today.
Since the German reunification on 3 October 1990 the geographical center of Germany is located approximately 500 m north of Niederdorla. On 26
February 1991 the Kaiserlinde was planted in the tribute oft he
geographical center. In close proximity there is a center stone
with all the detailed information about the area.
Hainich National Park with a treetop trail and wildcat village (appx.10-30 km)
Surrounded by the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Region Hainich can find a canopy walk, where you can stand between the treetops and walk over hanging bridges through the jungle. The observation tower also offers a view over the entire region, the Thuringian basin, the Thuringian Forest and the Harz Mountains. The shy wild cat can be discovered on a guided tour in the Wildcat Village Hütscheroda.
The picturesque Eichsfeld with castles and monasteries (about 15 km)
The Eichsfeld has besides beautiful landscapes that invite for walking, some interesting castles and monasteries.
Eisenach and the Wartburg (about 40 km)
Eisenach is a city in Thuringia, and also one of the Luther cities. It is about 40 km away from Muehlhausen. Eisenach is famous for its UNESCO World Heritage Site Wartburg Castle, which is enthroned above the city. In the Middle Ages the castle was the seat of the Landgrave of Thuringia and Martin Luther translated the New Testament from Greek into German here. The composer Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach in 1685 as well.
